Mission To strive for connecting the curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities in the process of transforming socio-economic conditions of tribal and downtrodden society for happy, healthy and prosperous life.
Aims and objectives of the University: Amongst its several aims and objectives, the University chiefly seeks- (i) to provide avenues of higher education and research facilities, primarily for the tribal population of India; (ii) to disseminate advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in tribal art, culture, tradition, language, medicinal systems, costumes, forest-based economic activities, flora, fauna and advancement in technologies related to the natural resources of the tribal areas; (iii) to collaborate with national and international universities and organizations, especially for undertaking cultural studies and research on tribal populations; (iv) to formulate tribal centric development models, publish reports and monographs; and to organize conferences, seminars on issues relating to tribes; and to provide inputs to policy matters in different spheres; (v) to take appropriate measures for promoting the members of tribal communities who are capable of managing, administering and looking after their own needs by access to higher education through a university of their own; (vi) to disseminate advance knowledge related to the tribal population by providing instructional and research facilities in such other branches of learning as it may deem fit; (vii) to take appropriate measures for promoting Innovations in teaching learning process in inter-disciplinary studies and research; and to pay special attention to the improvement of social, educational and economic conditions & welfare of the Scheduled Tribes within the Union of India, their intellectual, academic and cultural development.

Indira Gandhi National Tribal University was announced by the Government of India in 2007 vide the act and statute of The Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act, 2007 (52 of 2007, 20th December, 2007). University began with a head start in the very next academic year 2008-09. The academic programme was launched by admitting student to the B.A., B.Com. and B.B.A. programmes. At present there are various programmes different streams at UG, PG and Ph.D. level which are supervised by the Dean of the Faculty, Head of the Departments, (Click here for UG and PG Programmes, 2020-21)

Decisions are taken in accordance with the provision of the Act/Statutes/Ordinance/Academic Rules and Regulations/ Policies etc. of the University received from Ministry of Education and Decision taken by the Executive Council from time to time and procedure/practices of the University. Policy matters are decided at the level of Vice Chancellor/Executive Council. The Vice Chancellor, The Director, Deans of the Faculties, The Registrar and officers of the University have been authorised by the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act, Statute 2007 and through the delegation of Financial Power to take key decisions. The University has adopted Decentralized Administrative structure thereby enabling departments to take decision in conformity with the Rule of the IGNTU and within the delegated power. |
